Bow Arts are inviting expressions of interest for the 3rd RAW Lab residency at Royal Albert Wharf, Newham, taking place from February to May 2018.
Open to: Fine Artists / Designers / Makers
Fee: Up to £4,000
Why: The RAW Lab is a key component of the Bow Arts Placemaking activity at Royal Albert Wharf, Newham, alongside our new artist studios and wider community and education programme. The RAW Lab is a space that offers residents and visitors a changing programme of arts and cultural events and activities. We are keen to explore how arts and culture contribute to creating a sense of place. The Lab hosts regular classes, exhibitions and events alongside a simple café that is open to the public four days per week.
What: The RAW Lab Residency is made up of:
a) A practical workspace in the RAW Lab, free to use throughout the duration of the residency. We would like the space to be well used and visibly active and interesting, so we encourage it to be occupied as much as is practical and possible throughout the duration of the residency.
b) A commission to create a new piece/s of work. This could be in or for the Lab space, or in the local environment. Whilst we expect this to take a physical form, the work could be in another format (audio walking tour, digital work etc). The commission should leave a legacy of some kind to remain in the space, and will form part of the growing archive from the residency series.
c) A series of Public-facing activity (workshops, events, talks etc) for local residents and visitors. These could be one-off’s, or part of a longer series, but we would expect these to total at least 8.
Additionally, the artist has the option to:
d) Host primary or secondary school visits. This could be simple studio visits, demonstration or talks, or a more structured practical workshop activity.
e) Exhibit or display work in the space.
The resident artist will be a key point of contact on site, and should therefore be happy to interact with the public on an ongoing, informal basis.
It is important to note that there will be multiple activity and uses in the space, and therefore a degree of flexibility to other activity will be required on all parts. For example, the current programme includes:
-Basic café/coffee offer – currently Thursday to Sundays, 10:00 – 4:00.
-Weekly Yoga classes; family art workshops
-Monthly life drawing classes, mindfulness sessions, masterclasses
-Occasional film screenings, exhibitions, open studios, hires and other events
