As a writer and author, I am excited by the variety of lives that coexist in modern cities. As you walk through London - particularly in an area like Tower Hamlets, where I have lived for most of the past six years - you can tell just by looking that things are different from street to street - with different people, views, smells, styles, architecture, aspirations, atmosphere. But you can't see at a glance the stories that have brought people to where they are - what do they go home to? Where have they come from? What do they want?
My first book, FREE: Adventures on the Margins of a Wasteful Society, was published by Ebury Press in 2010, and I am currently developing ideas for my second. I support myself in my longer-term writing projects with freelance journalism, focussing on art, culture and social issues for a range of publications including the Guardian and the Sunday Times.
