MA Show, RCA Sculpture, 2010

My work is concerned with the cultural management of the unknown or the unknowable and the potential for political agency in works of art. I am interested in how we rationalise subjects that are beyond the grasp of our knowledge or understanding and how this attempt to rationalise has manifested itself culturally. There is therefore an attention to modes of display, to the phenomenology of the encounter with the work of art, and to the debt of modern art to an idea of the 'other'. In my work I investigate these cultural moments to try to work out the fears and discomforts embedded in them and to try to create a physical space in which the horror or discomfort, pathos or pity of the original encounter can be articulated.
