Text Works

Words give a voice to the objects I portray ‘I’m tired, I’m alone’ an image of wilted Buddleia might seem to say but the accompanying phrase tells a different story, one of a warm day and budding romance.

Text prevents the images from becoming 'simple' still-lives, and lends to the work the feel of a page torn from a diary or a sketchbook, and alludes to the fact that the images you are looking at tell a small part of a greater narrative.

The act of slowing down, of making a time dedicated to contemplation and concentration is a vital part of my art practice, so rather than paint or print the text, I cut out and glue down each individual letter.

Often I feel as though I’m living my life as if it were a collage, habitually collecting fragments of the world around me, in order to keep close those thoughts and feelings that a photograph cannot capture.
