Bow Arts Trust Graduate Residency Award Winners!
The decisions have finally been made!
Bow Arts Trust is delighted to announce that the two winners of a six month residency at our new studio site, SE1, are Chloe Ostmo and Sophie Hoyle.
Bow Arts Trust launched this new studio residency award with the aim of providing crucial support for two recent graduates in that difficult period following graduation. The Award was open to graduates (2009 & 2010) of any UK creative courses. Graduates may have been studying at BA or MA level, within any creative discipline and using any medium/media.
The winners receive six months free access to their first professional artist’s studio. The two spaces, each of 200 square feet, are situated in Bow Arts Trust's newly refurbished studio site, SE1, near London Bridge.
The winners were chosen by Marcel Baettig (Director of Bow Arts Trust), Myriam Blundell (Bow Arts Trust Trustee, independent curator and Chair of the International Collectors Forum at the Contemporary Arts Society) and Sarah Elson (art historian, curator and collector).
Although it was the inaugural Graduate Residency Award, we had a great response and the judges were extremely impressed by the high standard of work from a diverse range of artists and designers.
Chloe completed a BA in Dance and Visual Art at Brighton and has just finished an MA in Fine Art at the Slade. Working predominantly with photography and film, she investigates the negotiations involved in representing both a three-dimensional original event or object and it's two-dimensional copy. She is interested in the potential of the photographic print as a complex ‘material’ that has the ability to confront the viewer as an object in the present as much as it operates as an image of a past event. Have a look at Chloe's work here.
Sophie graduated in Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art, CSM 2010, and has a background in Human Geography (BA, UCL 2009). Her work is concerned with the urban environment, both physical and social. She is interested in how we experience, think about and represent cities, and how people perceive and describe the spaces in which they live. Her practice encompasses printmaking, sculpture, installation and film-making. Check out Sophie's portfolio here.
Many congratulations to Chloe and Sophie - we'll be keeping you updated about all the exciting work they are going to be producing in SE1. There are spaces still available to rent if you are currently looking for a studio. Go to SE1 Studios online for further information.
Thanks to all those who took the time and effort to apply for the Award - keep an eye out for future projects from Bow Arts Trust aimed at supporting emerging artists.
