Using portraiture as a platform, my work explores the expression of human emotion, the role of identity and our awareness of self. Popular culture’s obsession with perfection and ideals often produces an image of man that camouflages perceived imperfections, inhibitions and sensitivities, in favour of something that is easy to engage with; poised, controlled and dignified. My work attempts to undress the ego, disregarding physical appearance and composure, in favour of inviting all things human into the portrait to create something uninhibited. It is an attempt to transcend physical identity and define people not by their outward appearance, but to capture something of their emotional and psychological state of mind.
