The landscape is a constant source of inspiration, from the sculptural shapes and textures that form the horizon, to the intricate patterns present in nature. For the past few years I have been exploring the notion of a memory created by past events - from dramatic geological and environmental changes to manmade scars - footprints of our ancestors, and the potential energy from these happenings being absorbed and contained within. My most recent body of work, Strangelands, describes a place in the far distant future where the old world has been destroyed and a new one begins. The images are of incohate landscapes which appear to form according to ancient laws of nature destruction and renewal. I prefer to work in the open air allowing the elements to assist and alter the shape and flow of the paint. Unpredictable movements of wind, rain and changing temperatures sometimes direct passing insects towards the colourful sticky surface where they too become unwitting hostages in the new world. I like to explore the idea of imperfection, the unfamiliar and the uncanny, where chance plays a major role and where the landscape takes on a creature-like appearance, embodying a kind of monstrous beauty.
